Cock family design on Nanakoji | |
age | Late Edo Period, 19th century |
size | 210 mm / 7 sun |
box | Wooden box |
This iron Kogai is a rare piece in extremely good condition. It displays a bird family including parents and their five chicks. The design is curved over Nanakoji; it skillfully expresses the scenes of a father bird watching over his family as a cock and a hen taking care of her chicks. It was produced in the late Edo Period. The color of rust implies the legitimacy of this piece as it is settled into chocolate, just as a Nakago of an excellent sword would show. Although it seems that the piece was actually used for swords, the form is intact and there is no damage and worn in the back.
An iron Kogai depicts a heart-warming family of rooster, hen, and chickens -- It is suitable to Tensho-koshirae, for it gives dignity and powerful atmosphere to the Koshirae.
